FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: Why did the Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) create the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour?

A: Through communication with both current and potential members, the IJGA found that a strong demand exists for a series of events contested throughout the Midwest, events designed specifically for the elite player.  The Mid-American Junior Golf Tour (MAJGT) is a direct result of the culmination of years of research and feedback gathered from Midwestern facilities, professionals, coaches, junior golfers and their families.

Q: How are the additional IJGA junior golf programs related to the MAJGT?

A: The IJGA offers additional programs that serve as a stepping stone to the MAJGT.  Both the IJGA Playing Member Division (age 14-18) and Youth Development Program (age 6-13) offer superb programming for junior golfers of all skill levels. Despite the addition of a preeminent midwest-based tour in the MAJGT, the Illinois Junior Golf Association will continue to host and manage numerous nationally recognized championships including the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship, the Chick Evans Junior Amateur Championship, the IJGA Girls Match Play Championship, and the IJGA Player of the Year Championship (Invitation Only). Eligibility for these and other elite level IJGA programs will continue to fall under IJGA guidelines and policies which can be found by visiting www.ijga.org.  Once a player proves himself/herself on that level they may chose to move on to the most competitive tour in the Midwest, the MAJGT.

Q: Are all of the IJGA and MAJGT policies and procedures the same?

A:

No, in fact part of the reasoning behind the creation of the MAJGT was to define a set of policies to relate to a specific group of juniors.  If you are a dual member of the MAJGT and IJGA please be sure to recognize the difference in certain policies.

Reminder:  All policies for any IJGA or MAJGT specific event can always be found on the corresponding Tournament Information Page.

Q: I am not sure which level of programming is right for my son/daughter.

A:

MAJGT members and tournament participants consistently shoot below the following scores:

Gender Age Score Yardage
Boy 8 - 11 105 5000
Boy 12 - 15 85 6200
Boy 16 - 18 85 6600
Girl 8 - 11 105 4500
Girl 12 - 15 95 5000
Girl 16 - 18 95 5500

If you do not meet the elite standards of the MAJGT, the IJGA offers additional programming for all junior golfers to Enter, Enjoy, and Excel at the game.

Illinois juniors with little to no competitive golf experience are advised to participate in the IJGA Playing Member and Youth Development Program (YDP), offered by the IJGA, before considering MAJGT membership.  Those juniors looking to solely become members of the IJGA can do so by visiting www.ijga.org for more information.  IJGA membership and tournament registration will not open until mid-February for non-MAJGT members.

Those with some competitive experience should continue to look at the IJGA Playing Member and YDP divisions with a focus on the most competitive events offered within the division in order to build the experience and confidence necessary to play on the MAJGT.  Many elite IJGA members play on the MAJGT concurrently with their IJGA schedule.  More information about the IJGA can be found at www.ijga.org.
