Youth Development

The IJGA recognizes the responsibility to educate all of our members in the rules and etiquette of the game. The YDP includes clinics (which instruct on skills and the rules & etiquette of golf) as well as the YDP Playing Event schedule.

These 3 tournaments are 9-or18-Hole Team scramble events (number of holes played is determined by the age of the junior). The field will be divided into five age divisions: age 13, age 12, age 11, age 10 and ages 6-9. These events are a collection of “pre-season” events held on Saturdays at IJGA host facilities.

The YDP Playing Event Schedule includes a series of events, plus Parent/ Junior competitions.

The 6-9 year old age division plays 9-hole events on par 3 courses. (Ten events in 2010)Following each playing opportunity, pass/fail rules and etiquette quizzes are given. No awards are given based upon scores, however, any player who competes in an event is given a participation award and certificate for that day.

In 2010, 6 to 9 year olds have two additional 18-hole tournament opportunities.

Members in the 10 & 11 year old division play on executive 9-hole courses. (Eleven events in 2010) All 10 & 11 year old members are given the opportunity to play 9 or 18 holes. In order to play 18 holes, members must meet a predetermined scoring requirement. All players must take a pass/fail rules quiz following the event, regardless of the number of holes played.

In 2010, 10-11 year olds have two additional 18-hole tournament opportunities.

The 12 & 13 year old flight is designed to prepare members for the transition into the Playing Member Division, and is the most competitive division of the YDP. Events consist of 18-hole individual stroke play competitions (on a regulation golf course) for both boys and girls. Girls are also offered a 9-hole division. (Fifteen events in 2010) Players in the 18-hole divisions are able to compete for ‘‘Player of the Year’’ points. At the end of the season, the YDP member with the most points (male and female) will be honored as the YDP Player of the Year. The 12 & 13 year old division is the only division within the YDP that allows registered spectators access to the course.
