ITASCA, Ill. – Matches came to a close Wednesday evening as the pairings for the Girls Championship Match and the Boys Semi-Finals were decided for the 40th Chick Evans Junior Amateur. The following recaps the day’s Matches:
Boys Round of 32:
Match 1: Charlie Kulwin (1) vs. Tadgh Burke (32) – Burke was 1-up following the third hold, before Kulwin won six of the next eight holes. Kulwin defeated Burke 4&3.
Match 2: Jack Marshall (16) vs Pablo Castro (17) – Castro held a 4-up lead through eleven holes. Marshall went on to win five of the last seven holes. Marshall defeated Castro 1-up.
Match 3: Alexander Creamean (8) vs Jason Gordon (25) – Creamean and Gordon had a back-and-forth match, with three lead changes. Gordon won Nos. 14 & 15 to take the lead. Gordon defeated Creamean 1-up.
Match 4: Ian Love (9) vs Alex Lee (24) – Love won the first seven holes to take a 7-up lead. Lee won Nos. 8 & 9 to get to 5-down at the turn, before Love closed the match on No. 12. Love defeated Lee 7&6.
Match 5: Carter Stevenson (4) vs Eddie Scott (29) – Carter Stevenson conceded the match prior to beginning due to injury. Eddie Scott wins via concession.
Match 6: Christian Wakeford (13) vs Liam Nelson (20) – Wakeford and Nelson each won two holes on the front nine to make the turn tied. Nelson won Nos. 16 & 18 to close out the match. Nelson defeated Wakeford 2-up.
Match 7: Millan Biggs (5) vs Tanner Leonard (28) – The match made the turn with a 1-up lead from Millan Biggs, before finishing No. 18 tied. The match ultimately went twenty holes. Leonard defeated Biggs in 20 holes.
Match 8: Alex Finger (12) vs Henry Reiland (21) – Reiland won five straight holes beginning on No. 3, with Finger winning Nos. 8 & 9. Reiland won Nos. 14 & 15 to finish the match. Reiland defeated Finger 5&3.
Match 9: Robert Politza (2) vs Quinn Ross (31) – Ross jumped out to an early lead, winning Nos. 3 & 5 for a 2-up lead. After a bit of back-and-forth, Politza won three of the last six. Politza defeated Ross 2-up.
Match 10: Robby O’Regan (15) vs Juney Bai (18) – The match made the turn with a 1-up lead from O’Regan, which he held onto to win on No. 16. Of the last seven holes, only one was tied (No. 14). O’Regan defeated Bai 3&2.
Match 11: Josh Pehl (7) vs Chase Blanchard (26) – Pehl won five holes on the front nine for a 4-up lead at the turn. Blanchard rallied to go 3-down through 12, but Pehl held off to win on No. 16. Pehl defeated Blanchard 4&2.
Match 12: Noah Zyung (10) vs Will Leber (23) – Noah Zyung won No. 1 and held the lead through the front nine. Leber took a 1-up lead on No. 11 after winning No. 10 & 11, before Zyung evened the match on 13. Leber won Nos. 16 & 17 to finish the match. Leber defeated Zyung 2-up.
Match 13: Dylan Drogemuller (3) vs Rory Healy (30) – Drogemuller won six holes on the front nine to make the turn with a 5-up lead. He won Nos. 11, 12 & 13 to close out the finish the match. Drogemuller defeated Healy 7&5.
Match 14: Ben Schieber (14) vs Gage Johnson (19) – Only one hole was tied on the front nine, with the match turning with a 2-up lead from Johnson. Johnson won Nos. 12, 13 & 14 to close out the match on No. 14. Johnson defeated Schieber 5&4.
Match 15: Clay Heilman (6) vs Drew Schauenberg (27) – Schauenberg made the turn with a 1-up lead, before winning three of the last six to finish on No. 15. Schauenberg defeated Heilman 4&3.
Match 16: Sam Dykema (11) vs Cooper Watt (22) – The back-and-forth match made the turn with a 1-up lead from Dykema. Dykema increased his lead to 2-up after No. 13, before Watt won three of the last four holes to push the match to extra holes. Watt defeated Dykema in 19 holes.
Girls Round of 16:
Match 1: Katharine Marshall (1) vs Sarah Zheng (16) – Marshall won Nos. 1, 5 & 7 to make the turn at 3-up. She went on to win Nos. 10 & 14 to finish the match. Marshall defeated Zheng 5&4.
Match 2: Emily Charles (8) vs Reese Wallace (9) – The match made the turn tied, with Charles & Wallace each winning one hole. The back nine was back-and-forth, with Wallace winning No. 18 to finish the match. Wallace defeated Charles 1-up.
Match 3: Caroline Owens (4) vs Mia Natividad (13) – Natividad held a 4-up lead at the turn before Owens charged to four of the next six holes to tie up the match on No. 15. Natividad and Owens each won one of the last three, before Natividad won on the first playoff hole. Natividad defeated Owens in 19 holes.
Match 4: Lexi Schulman (5) vs Ella Greenberg (12) – A back-and-forth match gave Schulman a 2-up lead at the turn, which she increased by winning Nos. 12 & 14. Schulman defeated Greenberg 4&3.
Match 5: Carter Sichol (2) vs Kaylee Dwyer (15) – After a strong start from Sichol, Dwyer won No. 9 to get back to 1-down. Sichol won three of the first four on the back nine, ultimately finishing the match on No. 15. Sichol defeated Dwyer 4&3.
Match 6: Katie Suk (7) vs Effie Perakis (10) – Perakis won Nos. 1 & 3 for a 2-up lead, which Suk evened out by the turn. Suk then won four of the last five holes to finish the match on No. 16. Suk defeated Perakis 3&2.
Match 7: Catie Nekola (3) vs Jennifer March (14) – Nekola made the turn with a 1-up lead after March won Nos. 7 & 9. Nekola then won Nos. 11, 12 & 13 to extend her lead to 4-up. Nekola defeated March 4&3.
Match 8: Allyson Duan (6) vs Reese Clark (11) – The match was tied through No. 4 before Duan won Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 for a 5-up lead at the turn. Duan defeated Clark 6&5.
Boys Round of 16:
Match 1: Kulwin (1) vs Marshall (16) – Marshall took a 1-up lead through No. 4, before Kulwin got the match back to tied at the turn. Kulwin won four holes on the back nine to win on No. 16. Kulwin defeated Marshall 3&2.
Match 2: Love (9) vs Gordon (25) – At the turn, Love held a 5-up lead. Gordon won Nos. 10, 11, 15 & 17 to go 1-down heading to No. 18. The two tied No. 18 for Love to win the match. Love defeated Gordon 1-up.
Match 3: Nelson (20) vs Scott (29) – Nelson made the turn with a 4-up lead following wins on Nos. 5, 7, 8 & 9. After winning No. 10, he closed out the match on No.
Match 4: Reiland (21) vs Leonard (28) – Leonard made the turn with a 3-up lead, and won Nos. 10 & 12 to increase the lead to 5-up. Reiland won Nos. 13 & 15 to get to 3-down before conceding the match prior to beginning No. 16. Leonard defeated Reiland via concession.
Match 5: Politza (2) vs O’Regan (15) – Politza finished No. 7 with a 1-up lead, but O’Regan won the next two holes to go 1-up at the turn. O’Regan won five of the next six to finish the match on No. 14. O’Regan defeated Politza 5&4.
Match 6: Pehl (7) vs Leber (23) – At the turn, Leber held a 2-up lead. Pehl won Nos. 10, 12 & 13 to tie the match, before Nos. 15 & 17 to finish the match. Pehl defeated Leber 2&1.
Match 7: Drogemuller (3) vs. Johnson (19) – Drogemuller won Nos. 4 & 5 to go 2-up, and maintained that lead through the turn. Johnson won Nos. 15 & 17 to make a charge, but Drogemuller won Nos. 16 & 18 to ultimately win the match. Drogemuller defeated Johnson 2-up.
Match 8: Watt (22) vs Schauenberg (27) – Watt finished the fourth hole with a 2-up lead, before Schauenberg won Nos. 5 & 6 to tie the match. Watt won the next two holes to make the turn 2-up, and held off Schauenberg to finish the match on No. 17. Watt defeated Schauenberg 2&1.
Girls Quarter-Finals:
Match 1: Marshall (1) vs Wallace (9) – Wallace won three of the first four holes to go 3-up, which is where the match stood at the turn. Marshall won No. 10 before Wallace won the next four holes to finish the match on No. 14. Wallace defeated Marshall 6&4.
Match 2: Sichol (2) vs Suk (7) – A back-and-forth front nine left the match tied at the turn. The back-nine never got to more than 1-up for each player, with Suk entering No. 18 with a 1-up lead. Suk made a crucial long putt on No. 18 to win the match. Suk defeated Sichol 1-up.
Match 3: Nekola (3) vs Duan (6) – Duan won the first hole to go 1-up, and eventually made the turn at 2-up. Nekola fought to tie the match by No. 13, and the match went into No. 18 tied. Duan won the eighteenth hole to win the match. Duan defeated Nekola 1-up.
Match 4: Schulman (5) vs Natividad (13) – The match was tied through No. 6 before an eagle on No. 7 by Natividad gave her a 1-up lead. Schulman won No. 8 to tie the match, which remained the score before Natividad won No. 14. Natividad then won No. 17 to finish the match. Natividad defeated Schulman 2&1.
The Girls’ Semi-Finals and Championship Match, along the the Boys Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals, will take place at Itasca Country Club on Thursday, July 21st. The Boys’ Championship Match will take place on Friday, July 22nd. Find the updated Match Play brackets below:
