NEW LENOX – The final round of the Sanctuary Open came to a close after a blustery, rainy day. Ben Tyrrell (2018) of Edwardsville, Ill., was named the champion in the Boys Division with a tournament total of a 1-over-par 145. In the Girls Division, Lauren Beaudreau (2019) of Lemont, Ill., was named champion with a tournament total of 3-under-par 141.
The 2016 Sanctuary Open is a 36-hole stroke play competition featuring 83 junior golfers representing Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The Boys Division played the par-72 Sanctuary Golf Course from 6,533 yards, while the Girls Division played from 5,805 yards.
The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18 and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.
“This was our sixth year coming to Sanctuary Golf Club,” said Elisa Hermes, director of the MAJGT. “We saw some great scores considering the conditions for the final round.”
Tyrrell, who was one of four players who were under-par for the final round, carded four birdies and one eagle enroute to his final round 3-under-par 69. This was the 2018 grad’s first MAJGT win.
Matthew Clark (2016) or Westchester, Ill., and Jake Vercautren (2018) of Naperville, Ill., finished the final round T2 with a tournament total of 2-over-par 146. Rounding out the top-5, with a tournament total of 4-over-par 148, were Trey Tussey (2016) of Metamora, Ill., and Tommy Dunsire (2018) of Naperville, Ill.
In the Girls Division, Beaudreau, who was the defending champion, took a commanding lead during the final round, carding three birdies and ten pars for a final round 2-over-par 74.
Penelope Tir (2019) of Winnetka, Ill., finished in second with a tournament total of 8-over-par 152. Coming in third place was Brianne Bolden (2019) of Mokena, Ill., with a tournament total of 10-over-par 154.
The MAJGT’s next event is set for April 16 – 17 at the Wilmette Golf Club, the North Shore Open.
