URBANA, Ill. – The Mid-American Junior Golf Tour 2017 season kicked off last weekend at Stone Creek Golf Club for the University of Illinois Open. After 36-holes two players earned champion honors. In the Boys Division, Jack Vercautren (2018) of Naperville, Ill., took the top spot on the leaderboard, while Kira Wolf (2020) of Matton, Ill., took the Girls Division.

The U of I Open was a 36-hole, stroke play event played at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill. This event featured 64 junior golfers from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. The Boys Division played the par 72 course from 7,118 yards, while the Girls Division played the course from 5,842 yards.

The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18 and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.

Vercautren carded a tournament total of 2-over-par 146 with consistent rounds of 73-73. He carded two birdies and 13 pars during the final round to maintain the top spot on the leaderboard. This is Vercautren’s first MAJGT victory, his previous best finish was the 2016 MAJGT Sanctuary Open.

Coming in runner-up was Brock Barnhart (2020) of Robins, Iowa, with a tournament total of 3-over-par 147. Two strokes back, in third place, was Brian Joseph (2020) of Wilmette, Ill., with a 5-over-par 149, with an impressive 1-under-par 71 final round. In fourth place was Brett Seward (2017) of Aurora, Ill., who carded a 6-over-par 150 and rounding out the top-5 was Nicholas Ceruzzi (2018) of Sterling, Ill., with a 7-over-par 151.

In the Girls Division, Wolf carded seven birdies en route to her 1-under-par 71 final round score, bringing her tournament total to 3-over-par 147. This is Wolf’s first MAJGT victory, her previous best finish was third place at the 2016 Championship at Geneva National.

Abby Cavaiani (2018) of Wales, Wis., came in runner-up with a two-day total of 6-over-par 150. In a tie for third place with a 9-over-par 153 tournament total were Brianne Bolden (2019) of Mokena, Ill., and Grace Curran (2019) of New Lenox, Ill.

Next the MAJGT will travel to Heritage Bluffs GC in Channahon, Ill., April 15-16.
