HOMEWOOD, Ill.—The first round of the MAJGT Second City Classic had perfect playing conditions throughout the day. The event was hosted at Ravisloe Country Club and featured 117 junior golfers from Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota. The Boys Division played the Par 70 course from 6,310 yards, while the Girls Division played from 5,644 yards.

“It is fantastic to be at such a great facility with rich Chicago golf roots,” said MAJGT Director Elisa Hermes. “Donald Ross courses always provide a true test of golf and I think the juniors really enjoyed themselves this week. We saw some impressive scores during both rounds.”

In the Boys Division, Parker Reddig (2017) from Minneapolis, Minn., fired a front nine 29 en-route to a first round 4-under-par 66. The Florida State commit’s round featured seven birdies. Reddig’s first round total gave him a five shot lead over Winnetka, Ill., native Bennett Cotten (2019) and Glen Ellyn, Ill., resident Kevin Nelson (2017). Cotton and Nelson recorded rounds of 1-over-par 71.

In the Girls Division, Hadley Mortiz (2018) of Wheaton, Ill., fired 4-over-par  74 to jump out a one shot lead over Naperville, Ill., resident Arushi Singh (2018), who shot a 5-over-par 75. South Elgin, Illinois’s Megan Furtney (2019) and Louise McCulloch (2016) of Wilmette, Ill., each shot 76 to finish the day tied for third.

The second round provided a little drama in the Girls Division, Furtney and Mccolluoh both carded rounds of even-par 70 leading them to two-day totals of 6-over-par 146. A sudden death playoff was needed to determine the champion. In the playoff, both girls hammered drives down the center. On their approaches, McCulloch missed the green right and Furtney stuck it to 30 feet. McCulloch had a great chip to give her a 5-foot putt for par. Her save attempt just brushed the edge for a tap in bogey. Furtney knocked her 30 footer to about one foot and made par to secure her second MAJGT victory of the 2016 season.

The Boys Division, played most of their rounds in the rain but the stormy weather held off and cleared up on the back nine. Reddig went out with a 3-over-par 38 on the front nine, but finished strong to secure his first MAJGT victory of the 2016 season with a 2-under-par 33 finishing the day at 1-over-par 71. Reddig finished the tournament with a 3-under-par tournament total of 137. Tyler Anderson (2017) of Mundelein, Ill., shot a second round 2-over-par 72 for a total score of 5-over-par 145. Nelson also finished in a tie for second after recording a final round 4-over-par 74.

The MAJGT would like to thank the staff at Ravisloe Country Club for their hospitality and hard to work to help make the Second City Classic a success. The MAJGT heads to Lake Geneva, Wis., for the Championship at Geneva National, June 14-16.
