BARRINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Junior Golf Association’s 51st Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship began Tuesday. Tyler Greenspahn (2023) of Winnetka, Ill., currently sits atop the leaderboard after carding a 5-under-par 66 during the first round.

The Illinois State Junior Amateur (ISJA), also known as the Slovitt Cup, is a 54 hole, Stroke Play event, with a cut after 36 holes to the low 50 and ties. The field, made up of male junior golfers from Illinois ages 12-18, played the first round on the par 71 course from 6900 yards.

The Illinois Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing playing opportunities for its members ages 8-18, conducting educational clinics and events, and serving as a junior golf informational clearinghouse.

Greenspahn carded seven birdies during the first round. This is his first appearance at the ISJA Championship.

Currently T2 are Marcus Smith (2020) of Rockford, Ill., and Davis Billows (2021) of Lockport, Ill., who each carded a 2-under-par 69. Rounding out the top five with a 1-under-par 70 were: Sean Curran (2021) of New Lenox, Ill.; Eli Myers (2023) of Northbrook, Ill.; Jack Marshall (2022) of Lake Forest, Ill.; and Jason Gordon (2023) of Northbrook, Ill.

The second round of the 51st ISJA is set to begin Wednesday, August 12, at 7:30 a.m. off Nos. 1 and 10 at Makray Memorial Golf Club.
