WILMETTE, Ill. – The second Mid-American Junior Golf Tour tournament of the 2016 season concluded Sunday after two rounds of competitive golf. In the Boys Division, Chip Savarie (2018) of Winnetka, Ill., took top honors with a two-day total of a 1-under-par 139. Penelope Tir (2019) of Winnetka, Ill., took the Girls Division with a tournament total of 11-over-par 151.

The 2016 North Shore Open is a 36-hole stroke play competition featuring 123 junior golfers representing Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. The Boys Division played the par-70 Wilmette Golf Course from 6,363 yards, while the Girls Division played from 5,544 yards.

The MAJGT is designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18 and is nationally recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and American Junior Golf Association with all of its events providing national exposure.

“The weather this weekend was about as good as you could ask for in April,” said Matt Wennmaker, senior director of programing. “We would like to thank Jamie Locke and the entire staff at Wilmette Golf Club for having us out here. The course was in great shape and the kids were faced with a tough challenge.”

Savarie finished the second round 2-under-par 68 to claim his first MAJGT victory. The 2018 grad carded a combined six birdies and 25 pars over the two rounds.

Coming in runner-up in the Boys Division was Justin Choi (2017) of Northfield, Ill., with a tournament total of 1-over-par 141. Luke Armbrust (2018) of Wheaton, Ill., finished in third with a two-day total of 5-over-par 145. Two shots back was Matthew Murlick (2016) of Winnetka, Ill., and rounding out the top-5, with a tournament total of 8-over-par 148, were Reb Banas (2017) of Winnetka, Ill., Jacob Mueller (2017) of Libertyville, Ill., and Jake Mortell (2017) of Burr Ridge, Ill.

In the Girls Division, coming off a second place finish at the Sanctuary Open, Tir carded 12 pars and one birdie enroute to her final round 5-over-par 75. This marks Tir’s third MAJGT win.

The five-way tie for second place, with a tournament total of 17-over-par 157, included Maria Harrast (2017) of Oak Brook, Ill., Madison Banas (2016) of Winnetka, Ill., Hanna Tanaka (2019) of Glenview, Ill., Sophia Lau (2018) of Glenview, Ill., and Emily Duan (2022) of Buffalo Grove, Ill.

Notable events: Hanna Tanaka had a hole-in-one on the 128 yard par-3 No. 12 during the second round.

The MAJGT’s next event is set for April 23 – 24, at the Bolingbrook Golf Club in Bolingbrook, Ill.
